Mama E’s is a state-licensed home bakery on Pond View Road in Metter, Georgia. After twenty-three years at the Candler County Health Department, Marie did the thing she had always wanted to do: market her cheese straws and her divinity candy. She loves it.
The name came from her first grandchild. Taylor was supposed to call her MaMa Marie and cut it down to “MaMa E.” When she was casting around for a bakery name, her boss at the health department, June Anderson, said, “Well, I like MaMa E,” and it sounded right, so that is what it is.
The grandchildren have always been part of it: washing dishes, labeling, packaging, delivering. The cheese straws are salty, savory cheddar ribbons that finish with a hint of heat; the divinity is the old Southern kind.
